Next year, GMC trucks will be jumping on the "green" bandwagon with an innovative way to power their engines. In the near future, trucks hitting the lot of Nalley Buick GMC in Brunswick, GA will have a CNG option. What exactly is CNG? It stands for Compressed Natural Gas.
CNG is formed by compressing natural gas to less than 1% of the volume it occupies. CNG is traditionally stored and distributed in hard, circular containers. These future "bi-fuel" commercial trucks will be covered by GM's three-year, 36,000-mile limited warranty, as well as a five-year, 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty.
Trucks like the GMC Sierra are currently being tested by General Motors. And, if everything goes as planned we expect a release by 2012. In addition to testing the GMC Sierra, General Motors is also testing the GMC Savanna cargo van with this revolutionary technology.
"Customers want a choice when it comes to fuel because it helps them manage their business costs," said Brian Small, GM Fleet and Commercial Operations General manager.
"We listened and we are going to move fast to bring a bi-fuel CNG product to market to meet our customer's needs. GM's original equipment is engineered, validated and warranted which makes the decision to purchase our bi-fuel pick-up trucks easy," said Joyce Mattman, director, GM Commercial Product and Specialty Vehicles. "Like our CNG vans, this turnkey product will be the best solution in the market and makes good business sense."1
